Peace is Happening!

Picture
It seems like you can’t turn on the TV, log on to the internet or pick up a paper without seeing something about the escalating violence in the Ukraine.  Civil war is still raging just to the north in Jerusalem's neighbor, Syria.  On any given day, anywhere in the world, innocent lives are lost to ethnic cleansing, border disputes, or religious conflict.  Even in our own backyards of America, senseless gang violence claims victims every hour of the day.

But, at a school in East Jerusalem, Peace is Happening

...and YOU can join the movement!

At this Christian American school--Jerusalem Schools in Beit Hanina, Palestinians are seeking ways to proactively engage with their Israeli counterparts in promoting peaceful interactions.  When I arrived at the school to serve as the high school Principal in 2008, there were fights happening on a weekly basis from within and from without.  However, as the leader – and as a man devoted to Jesus Christ – I had to find a solution.  We encouraged them to practice peace by tracking the number of days without violence – Days of Peace.  A few days of peace rolled into weeks, then months.  Now, it’s the norm at the Jerusalem School.

"If we do not teach our children peace,
               someone will teach them violence.”
                                                                         – Colman McCarthy
It sounds really simple...and it is!  We have been teaching peace for the last 3 years, hosting a international Proactive Peacemaking Day in March for the past 2 years and developing a digital, interactive curriculum of peace education.  As a result, peace is happening within a country torn by centuries…millennia…of conflict! And it can happen everywhere…with your help!

Go to PeaceisHappening.org for more information on the feature-length documentary being made about this phenomenon.  At the site, you can also make your Pledge for Peace and join the movement!
